MAGGIE POPE BSc (Hons) Herbal Medicine, MNIMH
Herbal medicine is the oldest form of medicine used by every civilisation, and research endorses its safety and effectiveness. Over a quarter of current pharmaceutical drugs prescribed by GPs are derived from plants.
Modern herbalists study to obtain a specialist degree which incorporates many aspects of orthodox, medical training: anatomy, immunology, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, etc. They are qualified to diagnose illness, interpret blood and urine test results and carry out routine, physical examinations, and are trained to work alongside doctors and other health professionals using evidence-based medical research.
Herbal medicine is suitable for everyone, including babies and the elderly. Practitioners are trained to identify suitable treatments for pregnant women and nursing mothers, and to prescribe safely in conjunction with orthodox drug regimes.
